Content can mean different things to different people. I’d like to give my definition of what I mean by content when it comes to creating income on the Internet.
When you talk about its main essence, content is material that folks mentally consume when they’re on the Internet.
Content comes in a lot of different shapes, sizes and forms. The three most common are articles, videos and audios. So, when you think about them through this context, usually people say, “Alright, so, we’re talking about content that informs or educates.” That’s true in one sense, I am using it that way. Content is a great way to inform and educate someone on a given topic.
But content is also used to entertain, and it’s also used to sell. It’s an extremely effective and essential element when it comes to selling a product.
Below are some real examples of some very well known successful websites that make heavy use of content.
The first one is eHow.com. eHow is just a giant collection of articles and videos explaining how to do things. You could go to eHow and type in “how to crochet” or anything …. “how to drive a stick shift,” etc., Anything you are wondering about how to do, there will probably be something on eHow about how to do it.
There are varied types of help that is offered on eHow, videos, audios and articles. They make heavy use of content to get traffic and to provide value to users.
Another site that you may be even more familiar with than eHow, is YouTube. YouTube is undoubtedly one of the most popular websites on the Internet. YouTube is an example of people providing content to each other because you can create a video, and you can upload it to YouTube pretty much on any topic imaginable and share it with everybody else. So, you can go to YouTube and watch videos – and it’s just tons and tons of content.
Another example is Twitter as Twitter is a place where users can provide content for each other through tweets where people are posting what they’re doing and tweeting about various things. This is still considered content as each tweet gets ranked on Google.
There are many other examples of websites making heavy use of content, but I wanted to show you these top three examples to crystallize what I mean when I’m talking about content in relation to creating websites and making money online.
Why Is Content So Important?
Content is typically what people use the Internet for. Content drives the Internet itself. Have you ever heard the phrase: “Content is King?” If you’ve spent any time trying to learn to make money online, you’ve probably heard that phrase some time or another.
That phrase was actually invented by Bill Gates, which was the title of an article he wrote back in the 90s before the Internet was as huge as it is now.
Bill Gates, as many people know, is one of the richest people in the world. He has been at the forefront of business and technology for many years now so the prediction he made is very interesting. Bill Gates’ prediction came true.
A website called Alexa.com tracks traffic information for websites, and you can go there and see how a website is performing in terms of traffic and popularity. If you click on the link called “Top Sites’ Alexa will give you a list of the top sites in the world in terms of traffic.
You’ll notice the consistent theme of content throughout these sites. Number one in the world right now is Google, and what does Google do? Google provides content – it’s a portal where people can access content and information. Of course, Google does more than that; it really brings the INternet to that individual person, but a big bulk of what they bring to that person is content.
Number two is Facebook and Facebook is all user-generated content. It’s a social networking site.
YouTube is number three by traffic in the entire world by content and it’s in the form of videos this time.
Yahoo is number four and is another portal that publishes content in a variety of different mediums and forms.
Number six is Wikipedia which is one of the largest content based websites on the Internet as it’s like a giant encyclopedia.
All of the Top Sites on Alexa – getting the MOST traffic are ALL content based websites.
The Power of Content
- Content gives visitors a reason to spend time on your website. If you give away good content on your website, people are going to actually stay on your website longer, and they’re going to visit your website over and over again. Why? Because you’re giving them something of value that is actually adding to their lives.
- Content is search engine food which translates to traffic for you. If you have good content on your website, you’re going to get high rankings in the search engines – in Google, Yahoo and Bing. The reason why is because those search engines want to give their users quality content, the content they’re looking for. So, if your website can provide that content, they’re going to rank you highly and send lots of traffic.
- Content is very effective in selling products. Content itself is the sales message for the product. It’s the selling points that actually sell the product. In addition, content can be used to create and enhance customer relationships which in turn, translates to more product being sold.
Good Content can be used to create information based products. The business model of creating and selling your own information products is an extremely effective and can be a very lucrative business model.
It’s my favorite because anybody can create an information product. After it’s created, you can sell it over and over again. It’s a low cost business to start. There are very high profit margins and the demand for information is only growing and growing.
