Mistake #1 – You Have To Be Tech Savvy In Order To Succeed

Absolutely NOT! You can learn as you go. Don’t assume that you have to know how to build websites and be a graphic designer in order to have an online business. I learned as I went along.

I did sell products on eBay years ago and learned how to create a nice looking ad simply by trial and error. I made many mistakes, but I enjoyed trying and actually learned how to do a decent job of it.

I then revolted against the high profit-reducing fees that eBay charged me to host pictures on THEIR server, so decided to buy a domain and host my own!

Was it hard? Yep. Was there a steep learning curve? Most definitely. Were there days when I felt like throwing the computer in the garbage? Sure! But I learned how to be independent from others and stay in complete control of my business.

If you have no desire at all to learn, you could probably have a website made for less than $100 total – try Elance.com or Guru.com, however, it is good to at least have a working knowledge of the very basics so that you won’t be scammed by others.

There are free tools if you want to try it yourself. Sharepoint Designer and FileZilla are free downloads on my Free Stuff page. You don’t have to become an HTML expert or anything of the sort. You can build a page by using the WYSIWYG editor. This stands for “What You See Is What You Get” and will allow you to design a page pretty quickly without having to know the technical stuff.

Mistake #2 – It Costs A Lot To Start An Online Business

This is just not true. In my Golden Nuggets – Internet Marketing Basics video training, I cover the specific costs involved to get starting earning money from home.

If you are on a shoestring budget, all you need is a hosting account and an email marketing company. I use Bluehost and AWeber and have been very pleased with the customer service. This will be approximately $26 per month after you buy a domain name for less than ten dollars for the entire year. Now, in my opinion, $26/mo. is VERY inexpensive to start.

Mistake #3 – You Have To Have An Email List

Having an email list is fantastic, and I’m sure glad I have one. However, you don’t have to START out having one already. You will build one along the way as it’s actually better to start out this way. People that purchase email lists are not going to have built a relationship with their subscribers and this is not a very good plan. I would never buy anyone’s email address.

How do you start to build a list? You can take advantage of Google’s free keyword tool which will help you to hone in on a market that will get you good traffic, but not be so far out of reach because of terribly high competition.

You can offer a great free report containing valuable packaged information for the folks interested in the market you choose and offer it as a free gift in order to get someone to opt in to your email list.

People really like convenience and appreciate information that is all bundled in a package for them to easily read. You would get a new subscriber as you provide free information in exchange. This is a win-win situation.
