Spam Blocker For WordPress

I’d like to help you stop the spam commenting on your blog as well as spam from trackbacks with this spam blocker for WordPress.

There’s nothing more annoying than waking up to 256 spam comments on your blog!

There are many services that you can pay for to cut out spam altogether but if you do not have the budget for that and want a free solution, then Akismet is the answer.

In this blog post I’m going to show you how to set up the Akismet spam blocker.  If you have a WordPress blog, more than likely you will have already set up a contact us page.

Spam Blocker for WordPress imageWhat the Akismet spam blocker is going to do is that it’s going to prevent automated bots and other spammers out there from filling in this form automatically, and sending a bunch of spam to your e-mail address.

Go ahead and log into your dashboard, your Word press control panel.  Scroll down a little bit and go to plug-ins on the left-hand side.

If you don’t already have Akismet listed in the plug-in section, Click on “Add New” and then type in Akismet in the search field.  Install this free plugin.

Click  “Activate” so that it is able to be used on your blog.  When you do that you’ll see a yellow strip at the top that says Akismet is almost ready, you must enter your Word press API key for it to work so go ahead and click that link.

You’ll be taken to a page where you can click a link that says get your key.  That will open up Akismet.com and just go ahead and enter your e-mail address and then Akismet is going to e-mail you an API key.

It will ask you to choose a username and then what’s going to happen is Akismet is going to send a confirmation message to the e-mail address that you entered.  Click the link inside the e-mail to activate your API key.

This will take you to a page telling you that your account has been activated, and it’s going to display your API key along with your username and password.Spam Blocker for WordPress

Just copy the API key by highlighting the API key, and right clicking with your mouse and choosing copy.  Then go back to your dashboard, Akismet Configuration, and if you can’t get back just go to plug-ins on the left side then click on Akismet configuration link.

Enter the API key into the field that says WordPress.com API key.

Click update options and that’s it Akismet is now set up, and you’ll see a drastic reduction in the number of spam comments spam trackbacks on your blog.  It will more than likely completely disappear.

Akismet is a great way to save time in your daily routine so you can spend more time on content creation instead of deleting spam comments.
