Pinterest – The Latest Wave in Social Marketing

Successful Internet marketers know that they have to stay on top of the latest trends if they are going to get traffic and sell products.  Because of that, lots of marketers are starting to use Pinterest. What is Pinterest?

Pinterest is an image and video based social book marketing site.  Basically, people can bookmark, or pin, images and videos on the site.  These images and videos can be arranged into categories via boards.  If you choose to create a board, you’ll be prompted to select a category.  Then, you can put all of the pictures and videos for that category into the board, which will make it easier for people to browse and share. Once the images are uploaded, people can “Like on Facebook” Tweet or email the link.  Additionally, users can “Like” the picture or video via Pinterest.  When they do that, it will show up on their Pinterest profile.

Along with these sharing options, you can re-pin the picture or video so it will show up on your Pinterest page, or you can embed it on your website or blog.  All of these features make it very easy to get exposure on Pinterest.

Pinterest and Marketing

Pinterest can assist people with Internet marketing in several ways.  First, the site has a “Product” section that people can look through.  You can upload your products to the section, and if anyone clicks on the picture, they’ll be redirected to your website.  At that point, they’ll be able to purchase the product.

Additionally, they can re-pin the product on their page, or share it with others.  That will help your products get even more traction in the marketplace.Along with that, Pinterest will help you with branding.  From uploading your logo to sharing pictures from your business, you can teach people about your brand in a fun way.  This will definitely help you get more exposure, which is essential when you own a web based business.

Furthermore, Pinterest will help you engage your followers.  You can create community boards and allow your followers to add their own pictures to them.  This will help you find out what your customers like, and it will also make your Pinterest page a fun place for your followers.  This type of engagement is incredibly beneficial, so be sure to take advantage of it.

Finally, Pinterest will help you get image links to your site.  This will help you with link building.  Search engines analyze links that point to your site.  Then, they assign your site a page rank based on the links and other factors.  When you use Pinterest to point links to your site, you can move up in the search engine rankings.  This is an easy (and fun) way to take care of some of your link building tasks.

Tips for Using Pinterest for Marketing

It’s natural to want to go on Pinterest and start pushing your business and products immediately.  However, as with all social networking sites, it’s important that you build up a reputation before you start pushing products.  Follow some users, comment on their pictures and share links with your friends.  This will help you stand out on the site.

Once you interact with people, you can start promoting your products.  At this point, people will be more compelled to see what you have to offer, so you can actually start making some sales.

Sign Up with Pinterest Today

Pinterest is currently in Beta.  That means you need to request an invite from the site, or you need to get a Pinterest user to send you an invitation.  If you need to request an invite, go to and click the “Request an Invite” button.  Then, enter your email address and click “Request an Invitation.” You’ll likely receive your invitation within 24 hours of requesting it.  However, since the site is in Beta and growing in popularity each day, it may take a little longer.  Just keep checking your email, and sign up as soon as you are able to do so.

While you wait for your invitation to come through, take a minute and think about how you’ll use Pinterest.  What features do you think you’ll use the most, and how will it help your business?  Let me know in the comment section below.  Also, feel free to share any additional thoughts you have about this social bookmarking site.

      Hi Gary,

Nothing “happens”… just have their picture boards in a list of people you follow so you can see the pics they pin easily and keep up to date when they add something.

      Have a great day. :)
