Sometimes things just don’t go the way you planned in negotiating a business deal – and one person gets hurt. If you get scammed by a business deal that you entered in good faith, it’s difficult to overcome the bad feelings. Not only has the situation robbed you of your confidence and your money, but it’s also stolen your trust in someone else. Losing your confidence and trust in others is a serious issue so let’s look at potential solutions to this problem.
After being scammed by my first coach I almost quit but pressed on, and I’m so glad I did!
It’s especially hard when beginning Internet marketers fall for a ‘get rich quick’ scheme that they’ve paid for and are supposed to have help and support with – then, the seller falls through on his or her promises and the fledgling marketer is left on his own.
Losing Your Confidence And Trust In Others
Shattered trust and confidence is hard to regain, but quitting isn’t an option if you really want to make your dreams come true – become your own boss and make a good living from the Internet and your creativity.
Whether you’ve bought a product that doesn’t live up to the sales pages or hired a freelancer that didn’t deliver, there are steps you can take to rectify the situation and make sure it doesn’t happen again.
If you purchased a product that you think didn’t live up to the sales copy, here are the steps you need to take:
Read the sales copy again. Perhaps you didn’t read the ‘fine print.’ Reading it a second time might clarify what you didn’t notice when you made the purchase.
Contact the owner/creator of the product. Be professional and gracious in letting him or her know that the product didn’t live up to your expectations. Most legitimate IMers will act quickly and professionally to rectify the situation.
Do you want a refund? If the owner/creator of the product doesn’t get back to you or doesn’t want to work with you to make you feel better about the product, you must decide if you think it’s worth seeking a refund.
Depending on how you purchased the product, you’ll need to go through the channels of obtaining a refund. This may take several weeks, but if you’re really dissatisfied, take the time and effort.
Always address the problem professionally. Don’t present an angry stance when leaving feedback on the product or seeking a refund. Calmly state the reason for the dissatisfaction of the product so that others can make their own decisions.
Are you constantly disappointed in products or services? A habit or pattern may be developing because you might not be reading the sales copy adequately or you may be expecting more than could possibly be delivered.
If you’ve engaged a person with freelance work such as content for your website and aren’t happy with the results, here are the steps you need to take to rectify the situation:
Look back at the instructions you provided. Were you clear about what you wanted? Freelancers aren’t mind-readers and usually work for many different Internet marketers. Be very specific in your instructions to them so that they can deliver a better product to you.
Did the deliverables match the portfolio? If you haven’t worked with this person before and hired him or her on samples in a portfolio, the work should be on a level with what he’s done in the past.
If it isn’t, he may be outsourcing the work or (in the case of writers) copying from other sources. (Be sure to use ‘Copyscape’ to be sure the work isn’t plagiarized.)
Contact the service provider. Give him or her a chance to make the situation right. Again, be professional and courteous and never angry or accusing. The person may have been having a bad day and will welcome the chance to make you happy with his work.
Leave professional feedback. Whether the work is great or shoddy, always leave feedback for others. It’s also good for the service provider so that he can learn from mistakes.
Are you always disappointed? If you’re consistently disappointed in the quality of services, you should look to yourself. Are revisions always necessary because you’re not conveying what you require in your instructions?
Are you paying low prices for low-quality work? If so, maybe you should seek out more experienced and professional service providers.
Armed with knowledge and self-confidence, you can professionally handle any situation that arises in business dealings. Unfortunately, we’re all likely to be scammed or disappointed at some time in our dealings on the Internet.
The main thought I’d like to leave you with is to not let the disappointment rob you of your desire to become a successful Internet marketer. There are professional IMers out there who deliver high quality products and services and will go the distance to make you happy.
If you’re disappointed with a product or service, follow the steps above to make it right. Then, chalk up your disappointment as a learning experience. Sometimes we learn more from our mistakes than from our triumphs.
Of course being scammed by my very first online marketing coach was a jolt that was difficult to recover from, but I pushed forward. Why? Because I had goals and wasn’t going to empower him to ruin my aspirations and chance for success!
