Generate Traffic with Trackbacks and Pingbacks

In today’s blog post, I’m going to explain trackbacks and pingbacks.  Both are forms of back links.  Thus, first I’m going to go over back links, and then I’ll dive into the main topic.

What are Back links?

Backlinks refer to the links that point to your blog or website.  These links can be standard back links, trackbacks, or pings.  Standard back links are links that point to website or blog homepage.  I’ll explain trackbacks and pingbacks later in this post.

Back links do a couple of things for website and blog owners.  First, they help owners move up in the search engine rankings.  In a recent post, I explained how search engines analyze keywords when determining search ranking.  They also analyze back links.  The more quality back links you have, the higher your search ranking will be.

Second, they give website and blog owners additional exposure.  Web traffic can access the links, click on them, and visit the main website.  This is a great way to boost your traffic.

Now that you understand the basics of back links, let’s look at trackbacks and pingbacks.  Both are forms of back links, and both can help you get some exposure on other blogs.

What is a Trackback?

A trackback is a way to give a shout out to other bloggers.  In order to understand this, I’m going to go over an example.

Let’s say that you read my blog titled “Instant Fiverr Goldrush – An Easy Way to Make More with Fiverr.” After reading my post, you decide to purchase the product.  You love the product, and write a review of it on your blog.  Since you were introduced to the product through my post, you decide to link to my post when you write your post.

Generate Traffic with Trackbacks and Pingbacks imagesYou can do this by creating a trackback.  Once you create the trackback, something really interesting will happen.  Your trackback will appear in the comment section of your post.  Readers will see an excerpt of your post, along with a link to the post.

Thus, trackbacks accomplish two things.  First, they let you give a “thank you” to the original poster, and second, they allow you to promote your blog in someone else’s comment section.

Now that you know how trackbacks work, I’m going to tell you how to create them.

How to Create Trackbacks

First, you’ll need to get the trackback link.  You can usually find this link at the end of a blog post, before the comment section.  Once you find the trackback link, copy it.

Then, you’ll need to put the trackback in your blog post.  When you upload a blog, you’ll see a box that says “send trackback to” or something similar to that.  You’ll need to paste the URL into that box and then post your blog.

It’s important to note that some blogs don’t have visible trackback links.  When that’s the case, you can email the blog owner to get the link, or you can use a pingback.

Now let’s move on to pingbacks.

What is a Pingback?

A pingback is the same as a trackback, only it uses different software.  The different software allows users to automatically send pingbacks.  When you send a pingback, an excerpt of your original post, along with link to the post, will appear in the comment section.  This is just like a trackback.

How to Create Pingbacks

It’s simple to create pingbacks.  All that you need to do is include a permalink to the site you want to link to inside of your blog post.

Permalinks refer to the permanent links on a user’s blog.  You can get the permalink by clicking on an individual blog post.  After you click on the individual post, copy the URL.

For example, if you wanted to create a ping to my Fiverr post, you would click on the post and copy the URL.  In this case, the URL would be http://www.carolamato.com/instant-fiverr-goldrush-an-easy-way-to-make-more-with-fiverr/.

You would include that link in your post.  For instance, you could write “I just read Carol Amato’s post at http://www.carolamato.com/instant-fiverr-goldrush-an-easy-way-to-make-more-with-fiverr/.

Then, a pingback would appear in my comment section, along with an excerpt and a link to your post.

Start using pingbacks and trackbacks in your blog posts.  You’ll generate some more traffic, and also gain favor with other blog owners.  Before you know it, you’ll have a solid reputation online, thanks in part to pingbacks and trackbacks.

I am so happy to see students satisfy with your explantions. That give me confidense that soon I will be using all those tools that you’re using and recommending. When i have my webside up and running i will also implement pigieback, no! I am kidding…
let me write it clear Trackbacks and Pingbacks tools to generate traffic.

I was talking to a guy yesterday… and he told me he was a teacher of 3 languages. Uf! If he can do that… i certantly can learn the language of internet marketers.
It is really amazing…. the more we study… the more in our brains we storage new things. In our conversation this american guy was talking better spanish than me. So, wanting to know more about his capacities I ask him: do you which foreign language has more influx o influence in the inglish language? He mention 2… but he said he was not so sure. When i told him that was German, he was not surprise… he then started serving me many german words that are part of the inglish language. One is beer… well of course! He happen to be a german descendant! Good night Carol.

      Hi Aida,

Well our human minds can only hold so much info at once. It is a layering process. I learned Italian because I worked with my Inlaws for a long time, and I was submersed in the “culture” which is essential to learning a language and becoming fluent.

Internet marketing has its own language, and we learn it little by little as we spend time on it.
Thanks for your comment, Aida, I appreciate you stopping by to share your thoughts.
      Have a great weekend.

So, curious, does this still work when you reduce it with a bit.ly link and create hyperlinked-title instead of using the long (sometimes rather ugly) link?

Secondly, those comments look so odd in the comment section – is it still good to keep them there?

    • http://www.CarolAmato.com/ Carol Amato

      Hi Darlene,

That’s a good question – I’ve never tried using cloaked links for TrackBacks and Pingback’s. I’ve always promoted my main site, http://www.CarolAmato.com/, and/or squeeze page. So I don’t know the answer to that question, sorry.

Yes it’s good to approve paying back some TrackBacks no matter how they look. It will help your site. I appreciate you stopping by – have a wonderful day. :-)
