What Is Google Authorship?
As a service provider, I have been asked about Google authorship quite a bit lately. It seems that many Internet marketers do not know what it is and how it works, or even how it can help them, so I thought I could write an article at the very least introducing some of the basics of Google authorship.
To explain this as plainly as possible, let us look at it from two perspectives: that of Google and that of you as an Internet marketer. Google is in the business of selling information. To generate revenue, they have to have content that people want, that is relevant and that will make people want to use them.
This way, people can also see Google ads, which are a big part of Google’s revenue. Consumers will always be searching for good content, and in the process they see the ads Google displays, which some buy from marketers – and because the marketers are happy, they place more ads.
And so it goes, an unbreakable cycle which can get broken if the quality of content Internet marketers are putting up is not up to standard. That is why Google will do their best to make sure that content is the best quality possible, and they select the websites with great relevant content, among other things, to rank at the top.
Google authorship is one of the ways to make sure that content on websites is of high quality. You have noticed that when you enter a search string, you will get a list of results and on some of them, on the left hand side of the screen, there is a little thumbnail picture of the author of the content.

That is what Google authorship is, it is attaching a personality to the content that you post online, making sure that because you want to be seen as an expert and as someone with some integrity, you always provide quality content.
Because Google wants only the best, they have provided you with this tool, just like they provide you with Webmaster Tools so that you can monitor your site and see the activity on your website.
Google Authorship and the Internet Marketer
As an Internet marketer you are always working for a higher click through rate; the more people click on your link or your ad, the higher the number of leads you’ll have and the higher the chances of increasing your revenues.
When your picture appears next to your content in the search results, it’s a tangible reminder that you should be mindful of the kind of content that you put online. It’s a way to challenge yourself to ensuring that all content you publish is topnotch.
Google authorship shows more than just the face of the author, it shows a link to his Google+ profile, the number of Google+ circles the author is in and a link to more search results for other content that he or she has published online.
Benefits of Google Authorship
First of all, at just a glance, people can see what your interests are through the kind of content you have published and they can click on it, giving them a chance to go back to the websites that hold that content.
Right away, the click through rate has improved. Content authors, because your Google+ profile is visible, you have a chance to make more connections, potential for new opportunities.
