5 Tips for Affiliate Marketers

People are often a bit confused when they first start out with affiliate marketing.  They don’t know what techniques to use, so they have trouble making money.  Today, I’m going to eliminate some of the confusion by giving you some straightforward, simple affiliate marketing tips.  These 5 Tips for Affiliate Marketers will help you get your affiliate marketing business off the ground.

Tip 1 – Think in Terms of Products Instead of Networks

Lots of new affiliate marketers think they have to sign up for a particular affiliate network and stick with that network to the end.  Thus, they sign up for ClickBank, LinkShare or one of the other networks, and then, if they can’t find any products they want to market, they suffer in silence.  This is the wrong way to go about affiliate marketing.

Instead of thinking in terms of networks, think in terms of products.  For example, if there’s a product you would like to market (or a company you want to market for), do a Google search so you can find the network for that particular product. 5 Tips for Affiliate Marketers image Let’s say you want to be an affiliate for a video game subscription service.  Go to Google and search for “video game subscription services.”  Go through the results until you find a company you like.  In this case, let’s say you decide to market for GameFly.  Once you make that decision, you’ll need to go back to Google and search for “GameFly affiliate program.”

If the company or product has an affiliate program, it will show up in the Google search results.  You’ll need to click on the appropriate webpage.  Then, you’ll be redirected to the company’s affiliate network.  At that point, you can sign up for the network and begin marketing the product.

When you look for affiliate products with this method, it will be easier for you to find what you’re looking for.  Additionally, you won’t be stuck marketing products from a single affiliate network.

Tip 2 – Choose Products You Believe In

New affiliate marketers also tend to select products without doing any research.  For instance, if they have a health and beauty site, they’ll select all of the health and beauty affiliate products they can find without seeing if they work. 5 Tips for Affiliate Marketers images If you do this, you might make some sales at first, but eventually, you’ll be viewed as someone who markets subpar products.  That type of reputation will make it difficult to sell products.

Thus, do your research before you market any products.  Then, you’ll have confidence in your products, and your customers will have confidence in you.

Tip 3 – Make Sure Your Niche is Targeted

Lots of affiliates choose niches that are too broad.  Because of that, they aren’t able to get targeted traffic.  Thus, instead of choosing a broad niche, such as “tennis shoes,” choose a targeted niche like “Nike running shoes.”  This will help you to get targeted traffic.  Targeted traffic turns into paying traffic, so this is essential.5 Tips for Affiliate Marketers pictureTip 4 – Build Your Email List

Affiliate marketers typically look at their customers as “one time buyers.”  This is a huge mistake.  Instead of selling people products and then leaving them alone, build an email list.  Then, you can market to your customers several times a week, year after year.  This will help you make lots of money with affiliate marketing.  Additionally, it will help your business grow and prosper year after year.5 Tips for Affiliate Marketers graphicsIf you need some help growing your list, check out the resources I have on this site.  You can use these resources to build a solid list and use that list to grow your business.

Tip 5 – Have Patience

This is possibly the most important tip I can give anyone.  You have to have patience with affiliate marketing.  You won’t make hundreds of dollars in sales in the first week, or even the first month.  It will take time to build your online presence.  Thus, set small goals.  For instance, set a goal of making one sale the first month.  Then, shoot for five sales in the second month.  Keep increasing your goals, and working to meet them.

Use these tips to get your affiliate marketing business off the ground.  Also, feel free to leave any tips you have about affiliate marketing in the comment section of this post.  I’m looking forward to seeing what you have to say about affiliate marketing.

Your email is FULL of good information. I NEED to hook my little red wagon onto the tail of your star so that I can soar. I am a legal document assistant (service biz) 25 yrs. old. I NEED to take charge of my website. The company that made it, is not charging me monthly for it. The site has some typing errors and misinformation on it, but I am not able to change it because I don’t know how to get into the basic make up of the site. (very frustrating). My ship seems to just be sitting in the habor right now, and I want to go places. I NEED to go places. I have an office, a house that I want to keep, and a law degree from UC, Davis, CA. I’ve beat Bank of America over the head so much that we’re both mutually tired.
You have been persistent in contacting me and today I really set down to read your full email. I like what I see, but I have very limited (to no) financial resources. I want 2012 to be a year of abundance and growth. I have decided that I want to take a class to increase my computer skills and knowledge–then I received your email. Today, is a good date to work from my office to increase my knowledge rather than driving to and from a class–that may not move at my pace. (I’m a retired communit college teacher) HELP me if you can, I’m ready to “soar!”

Carol, you know what…. i think i say it before, I KNOW A LOT FROM READING THE COMMENTS after you post your tips. Theresa… should have no trouble following your instrucctions. I am impress about her schooling and preaparation. If she is a retired person like me, she should have all the time in the world to prepare. But PATIENCE, is what most all need. Good luck to all! Your students should start a club to exchange ideas as we make progresses. And not disapear when they are making money. Money shouldn’t be the only goal. People need people, and we need to chear each other.
I wish you and your family the best for the comming year! Aida

      Hello Aida!
Thanks, and I am so glad you learn from the comments of my posts also!! :) That’s cool!
      Yes, Theresa should do well!

The motive for me to make money is in order to help the people I love. Money is nothing special, but it does allow a person to have the freedom of having more choices…choices of how to spend your time and how to help those that you love.

Hoping you and your family have a wonderful and safe New Years weekend! – Carol

      Hello Rhonda,

Your first task should be to understand the company “built” it for you or is hosting it and managing it for you, big difference! Find out from them the necessary information as they can direct you accordingly.
You’re welcome for all the info – I sure do enjoy helping folks if I can. Happy New Year! :)
